Summary

A memoir of love and loss, of being in the right place at the right time, and of the mysterious ways a beloved pet can bring people together, from CBS Sunday Morning News correspondent and multi-Emmy-Award-winning Martha Teichner。

There are true fairy tales。 Stories that exist because impossible-to-explain coincidences change everything。 Except in real life, not all of them have conventional, happily-ever-after endings。 When Harry Met Minnie is that kind of fairy tale, with the vibrant, romantic New York City backdrop of its namesake, the movie When Harry Met Sally, and the bittersweet wisdom of Tuesdays with Morrie

There’s a special camaraderie among early-morning dog walkers。 Gathering at dog runs in the park, or strolling through the farmer's market at Union Square before the bustling crowd appears, fellow pet owners become familiar–as do the personalities of their beloved animals。 In this special space and time, a chance encounter with an old acquaintance changed Martha Teichner’s world。 As fate would have it, her friend knew someone who was dying of cancer, from exposure to toxins after 9/11, and desperate to find a home for her dog, Harry。 He was a Bull Terrier—the same breed as Martha’s dear Minnie。 Would Martha consider giving Harry a safe, loving new home?

In short order, boy dog meets girl dog, the fairy tale part of this story。 But there is so much more to this book。 After Martha agrees to meet Harry and his owner Carol, what begins as a transaction involving a dog becomes a deep and meaningful friendship between two women with complicated lives and a love of Bull Terriers in common。 Through the heartbreak and grief of Carol’s illness, the bond that develops changed Martha’s life, Carol’s life, Minnie’s life, Harry’s life。 As it changed Carol’s death as well。

In this rich and touching narrative, Martha considers the ways our stories are shaped by the people we meet, and the profound love we can find by opening our hearts to unexpected encounters。

Martha Teichner is a correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning, but her story here is about her love of bull terriers, and how she agreed to care for a dying woman’s elderly dog, Harry。 She already had a bull terrier named Minnie, and an acquaintance approached her when she and Minnie were walking one weekend and asked her to consider taking Harry when his friend Carol could no longer care for the dog。 Martha was skeptical—would Minnie accept Harry? Harry was 11 years old and taking several medications—could she deal with his challenges? She and Minnie met Harry and Carol, and agreed。 When Carol became too ill to care for Harry, his occasional visits became permanent, and Martha sent her many amusing pictures and videos of the two dogs。 A friendship developed between not only the two dogs, but also the two women。 Teichner has written a wonderful story about friendship, both canine and human。

This was an emotional and heart-warming read。 It is also a very easy and quick read。 I enjoyed the look into the lives of these characters。 Be ready with tissue for the last 20% of the book though。 Thank you to NetGalley and Celadon Books for providing me with the book。 Opinions expressed are my own。

True story of how two dog mom's lives became intertwined, and taught them about friendship and love。 Making friends as adults is not easy。。。I was struck by how quickly Martha and Carol became intimate friends。 Trying to find forever home for Harry and fix Minnie's and Martha's broken hearts after loosing Goose leads to a loving friendship。 True story of how two dog mom's lives became intertwined, and taught them about friendship and love。 Making friends as adults is not easy。。。I was struck by how quickly Martha and Carol became intimate friends。 Trying to find forever home for Harry and fix Minnie's and Martha's broken hearts after loosing Goose leads to a loving friendship。 。。。more

Like any enthusiast of Martha Teichner's work, I embraced this book gladly with delight。 As a bull terrier lover, my delight was two-fold。 Surprised to learn this was Martha's first book, I'm praying it won't be her last。 Unsurprisingly, she is a gifted storyteller on the page, making you feel she is seated beside you relaying this beautiful tale of love, laugher, and loss。 At the top of the books I've read so far this year, where I'm sure it will remain。 Wish it would never have ended。 Like any enthusiast of Martha Teichner's work, I embraced this book gladly with delight。 As a bull terrier lover, my delight was two-fold。 Surprised to learn this was Martha's first book, I'm praying it won't be her last。 Unsurprisingly, she is a gifted storyteller on the page, making you feel she is seated beside you relaying this beautiful tale of love, laugher, and loss。 At the top of the books I've read so far this year, where I'm sure it will remain。 Wish it would never have ended。 。。。more

I loved this book so much! Admittedly, I am a bull terrier lover and have been owned by 5 of them。 There is no other breed quite like them。 However, I think any dog lover would enjoy this book。 It will make you happy and sad。 It is beautifully written。 I've always been a fan of the author on CBS Sunday Morning, but now I love her even more。 I highly recommend this book! Strong easy to read writing as the author is a natural story teller。 And speaking of the author, I hadn’t paid attention to her name (which I wouldn’t have recognized anyway) prior to starting the book。 A few pages in she mentioned she worked on The CBS Morning Show and I immediately could picture her as I could hear her voice through her writing! I googled and found that I was correct in who I was picturing。 This is a lovely story with some humor, lots and lots of love and of course much sadnes Strong easy to read writing as the author is a natural story teller。 And speaking of the author, I hadn’t paid attention to her name (which I wouldn’t have recognized anyway) prior to starting the book。 A few pages in she mentioned she worked on The CBS Morning Show and I immediately could picture her as I could hear her voice through her writing! This book was written by a true storyteller。 What Martha Teichner has done on tv for so many years, she now put into a book that is equally intriguing。 The story of a chance encounter and how it can create a fork in the road for you, a new friendship, or something that will have a profound impact on your life, is something we can all relate to。 Read it in two days, couldn’t put it down。 Very much enjoyed it。

This book is so much better than I anticipated it to be! I didn't think it would be a bad book--then it would not have been on my radar。 It is refreshing to read a memoir-style book written by an actual writer。 Martha is honest and her writing is bright and clean。 I was instantly caught up in the friendship of these two dog lovers and of course the adorable, money-pit dogs。 This is a story from the heart and not just a 'dog story'。 It was a bonus to learn about Martha's connections to Michigan。 This book is so much better than I anticipated it to be! I'm trying to get more memoirs in my life, so when I heard about When Harry Met Minnie, by CBS correspondent Martha Teichner, I jumped at the chance to read it! What made it even more desirable, was that it was about dogs, and… well…。 I love dogs! We start this book by meeting Minnie, a Bull Terrier dog owned by Martha。 Minnie was having a lot of difficulty, because her canine companion, Goose, had recently passed away, and she was lonely without the friendship。 Martha loosely put out feelers, s I'm trying to get more memoirs in my life, so when I heard about When Harry Met Minnie, by CBS correspondent Martha Teichner, I jumped at the chance to read it! What made it even more desirable, was that it was about dogs, and… well…。 I love dogs! We start this book by meeting Minnie, a Bull Terrier dog owned by Martha。 Minnie was having a lot of difficulty, because her canine companion, Goose, had recently passed away, and she was lonely without the friendship。 Martha loosely put out feelers, searching for an older, male bull terrier, to help fill that gap left by Goose's death。Enter Harry… Harry's owner, Carol, is dying of cancer。 Carol was extremely concerned about what would happen to Harry after her death, since he was high needs (many MANY medical problems) and she was fearful that no one would be able to take him。 They were connected by a friend of a friend, and the ensuing courtship of Minnie and Harry (their words!) and the friendship forged by Martha and Carol will warm your heart。 While to story will warm your heart, it is not all rainbows and unicorns。 There are sad parts, and happy parts。 This story made me laugh (as a fellow terrier owner, I know many of the traits of his group that Martha talks about!) and it made me cry。 Honestly, not everything ends happily in this story, but it will warm your heart in the telling of it。This book, while definitely written on the premise of a dog story, is truly a friendship story。 Martha and Carol don't know each other, and in a few short months, forge an intense relationship themselves。 This story is about them as well。 Their relationship is also a highlight of the book… Getting to know Carol, through Martha's eyes was well worth the read。This book was heartwarming and special。 I am trying to read more memoirs, and this one was a fabulous one to read。 I was entertained and engaged the whole time。 A big complaint that I have about memoirs is that I'll get engaged in a topic, and then the author will shift gears and talk about something that I'm less interested in。 I was engaged in Minnie and Harry's story throughout, and the story was told in such a linear fashion it was easy to follow and engage with。 I loved their story, and I'm sure (as a dog lover) it will stay with me for a long time。 。。。more

4+ A wonderful homage to bull terriers and friendship 。Martha Teichner is my kind of animal lover。 In the opening chapter of When Harry Met Minnie, she describes meeting a man while walking Minnie soon after her dog Goose died。 “For months, this man and I had talked, carrying on long, meaty conversations some days, just saying hello other times…。 I don’t think he ever knew my name or I his。 But we knew each other’s dogs’ names。” I can identify with that! Teichner loves dogs, but she especially loves bull terriers。 So when she finds out from an acquaintance that his friend Carol is dying of cancer and is looking for a loving home for her beloved bull terrier Harry, she reluctantly agrees to see if Minnie and Harry, both of them older dogs, can accept each other。The narrative of the bonding of Harry and Minnie is a fun romp。 The reader sees their personalities and idiosyncrasies, like Harry’s favorite game of catching and throwing tennis balls in a food bowl, and rejoice as the dogs bond。 There are a lot of memorable scenes, like taking the dogs for the Blessing of Animals at a local Episcopal church。Martha and Carol bond, too, and their friendship as well as Martha’s growing friendship among the other people who are Carol’s support network is an equally heartwarming part of the book, as Carol’s cancer proceeds to the inevitable conclusion。 Martha Teichner has a gift for picking out and bringing to life small but memorable events。 Not all were upbeat, but they were noteworthy, such as the Catholic priest in the hospice who tried to baptize Carol without her consent after she told him she was Jewish。 When Harry Met Minnie is about love, love between humans and dogs, love of dogs for other dogs and love among people, but it also displays Teichner’s clear love for New York City。 The city becomes more than just background, and the depiction makes me keen for my next opportunity to visit there again。 There are many smiles in When Harry Met Minnie, but not surprisingly there is sadness as well。 In the Acknowledgments at the end of the book Teichner says, “I thank Carol for bequeathing me so much more than her dog and for trusting me to find something other than just sadness in the last months of her life。” I agree。 I received an advance review copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley。 。。。more

Martha Teichner has had a long and stellar career。 She joined CBS news in 1977, and has been a correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning since 1993。 What comes across both on television and in her heartwarming and poignant book, "When Harry Met Minnie," is Martha's intelligence, competence, and empathy。 She adores dogs, particularly bull terriers, and in this debut work of non-fiction, Teichner focuses on a particular twosome: Harry and Minnie。 One day, an acquaintance told Martha about Carol Fertig, Martha Teichner has had a long and stellar career。 She joined CBS news in 1977, and has been a correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning since 1993。 What comes across both on television and in her heartwarming and poignant book, "When Harry Met Minnie," is Martha's intelligence, competence, and empathy。 She adores dogs, particularly bull terriers, and in this debut work of non-fiction, Teichner focuses on a particular twosome: Harry and Minnie。 One day, an acquaintance told Martha about Carol Fertig, who was quite ill and eager to place her bull terrier, Harry, in a good home。 Since Harry had a host of medical issues, tending to his needs would be a challenging and expensive undertaking。 Martha was interested, but she first wanted to see whether her bull terrier, Minnie, would take to Harry and vice-versa。Martha is initially anxious when she introduces Minnie to Harry, but she needn't have worried。 The two eventually bonded and grew to enjoy one another's company。 In addition, Martha admired the funny, courageous, and ebullient Carol, and both of them were thrilled when Harry and Minnie began to behave like canine siblings。 This intimate story focuses on the ways in which camaraderie and generosity enrich our existence, but also entail an element of risk。 What if a relationship goes sour or something happens to those we love? Teichner addresses these questions with sensitivity and insight。The author is a strong and independent woman who has traveled extensively and works long hours。 Although her profession is important to her, it does not exclusively define who she is。 Her selfless actions in her personal life demonstrate that this compassionate woman would move heaven and earth to help alleviate suffering。 "When Harry Met Minnie" will appeal to Teichner's fans, dog aficionados, and readers who appreciate the ways in which friendship blossoms when like-minded people are fortunate enough to find one another。 。。。more

This memoir is a touching and well-written story, but much sadder than I expected。 Although it includes the charming story of when Harry met Minnie, the book focuses more on the humans’ relationships with their dogs and with each other。 Some parts of the story were very cute and made me laugh, but I wish I had been better prepared for the sad parts。 Any animal lover should be prepared to feel some anguish reading this。All of the people and animals were quirky and interesting。 It felt like a priv This memoir is a touching and well-written story, but much sadder than I expected。 Although it includes the charming story of when Harry met Minnie, the book focuses more on the humans’ relationships with their dogs and with each other。 Some parts of the story were very cute and made me laugh, but I wish I had been better prepared for the sad parts。 Any animal lover should be prepared to feel some anguish reading this。All of the people and animals were quirky and interesting。 It felt like a privilege getting to know them a bit, although I do wish that some photographs had been included。 The locations also become characters in the story; I loved some of Ms。 Teichner’s descriptions of New York City。I was also intrigued with some of the author’s brief descriptions of her work in journalism and in environmental conservation。 I would love to see her write more about her work。This bittersweet story might not be a great choice for those who prefer happy endings or are squeamish about chronic illness and death, but I am glad that I read it。I was provided an unproofed ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review。 。。。more

Don’t let the playful title and cover image deceive you。 This is a poignant, melancholy, pensive story about friendship, love, and loss of humans and canines。Timing was difficult for me。 When the book arrived, I’d just lost one of my dogs to a horrific, freak accident。 I wasn’t in a good place emotionally, and I have to admit to avoiding this book for a couple of weeks。 Even with a little distance, the content was difficult, the sadness a heavy weight。 Fortunately, we’re given some splashes of h Don’t let the playful title and cover image deceive you。 This is a poignant, melancholy, pensive story about friendship, love, and loss of humans and canines。Timing was difficult for me。 When the book arrived, I’d just lost one of my dogs to a horrific, freak accident。 I wasn’t in a good place emotionally, and I have to admit to avoiding this book for a couple of weeks。 Even with a little distance, the content was difficult, the sadness a heavy weight。 Fortunately, we’re given some splashes of humor to offset the sorrow。The writing is vivid and engaging。 I felt like I got to know Carol, a woman with terminal cancer, and Harry, her aging dog in need of a new home。 The author also opens up about her own life and, of course, her dog Minnie, as well as those who came before。When Harry Met Minnie is so much more than a memoir about dogs。 This story goes to the heart of friendship, how it forms, what it means, and what we’re willing to sacrifice for love。*I used my BookishFirst points to receive a free ARC from Celadon Books。* 。。。more

I had a feeling when I chose this book that it wasn't just about dogs or even dogs bonding。 Sure, I was drawn to the name because my favorite movie is When Harry Met Sally, but I knew this wasn't about a dog love story either。 It's a book about companions, whether human or canine and the extent of sacrifice we're willing to endure to keep those relationships。Although it's sad, (If you've recently lost someone - furry or not - you may want to come back to this another time。) following how dog own I had a feeling when I chose this book that it wasn't just about dogs or even dogs bonding。 Sure, I was drawn to the name because my favorite movie is When Harry Met Sally, but I knew this wasn't about a dog love story either。 It's a book about companions, whether human or canine and the extent of sacrifice we're willing to endure to keep those relationships。Although it's sad, (If you've recently lost someone - furry or not - you may want to come back to this another time。) following how dog owners, Martha and Carol, become friends despite an unpromising cancer diagnosis is a reminder of our need to connect。 It's an example of keeping your word or commitment when times are hard。 We see that even Harry and Minnie benefit from their relationship on a basic level that we as humans at times take for granted。 Friendships give and take many things but they essentially are the batteries that fuel a full life。 This book approaches the difficult subject that all living creatures face, death, with an eye on the fullness of a life truly lived until the end--a life capable of great meaning up to the last second。 It's not an easy read, especially after the year we've had, but in many ways, I think books like this help foster empathy that is sometimes lacking in this world。Thank you Celadon Books for sharing this book! Sometimes we need reminders of how brief life is and how important it is to extend ourselves to tighten bonds even when they are short。 。。。more

This is a lovely book that's also quite sad。 Martha Teichner didn't know Carol when she agreed to consider taking on Carol's bull terrier Harry after Carol's death。 Once they met, however, they discovered that they were kindred spirits- both women who loved their dogs immeasurably。 Acquaintance quickly grew to friendship between both the women and the dogs。 After Carol's death, which comes too soon for all, Teichner copes with Harry's medical issues as well。 Know that there is much privilege her This is a lovely book that's also quite sad。 Martha Teichner didn't know Carol when she agreed to consider taking on Carol's bull terrier Harry after Carol's death。 Once they met, however, they discovered that they were kindred spirits- both women who loved their dogs immeasurably。 Acquaintance quickly grew to friendship between both the women and the dogs。 After Carol's death, which comes too soon for all, Teichner copes with Harry's medical issues as well。 Know that there is much privilege here - lots of money and time is spent on these bull terriers- but dog lovers know how that goes。 Teichner's distinctive voice rings throughout this generous book which isn't really about dogs but about how we care for one another。 Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC。 Excellent read that might bring a tear。 。。。more

This book was great! The story is a memoir of doggy friendship that is endured as well as loyalty and love。 This book is also about truly being there for a person in need and the companionship that follows。 What I really love was how heart-tugging the book was and how I can could from laughing to crying in an instant。 As an animal person, I couldn’t put it down! I am very impressed with this story! It is not very long and the dogs on the cover are not the most photogenic so I was a little hesitant to read it but I thought I would give it a try anyways。 And I am glad I did。 The story has two parts, that of the friendship between Martha and Carol and how it is connected by their two dogs Minnie and Harry。 Carol is dying of cancer and is looking for someone who loves bull terriers and would be willing to adopt Harry (despite his older age and various medic I am very impressed with this story!
